Downtown sinkhole was caused by main failure, not underground ‘void,’ geologist says

The first signs of the water main break happened Friday night, when water was seen bubbling up under Broadway at Biddle Street. The hole opened up on Saturday morning off an exit ramp of I-44 north of Biddle, expanding to an area of 35 feet by 20 feet.
