MSD Restores Full Treatment at Fenton Wastewater Treatment Plant

MSD Hosting Community Meeting @ 6:00pm at Arnold City Hall

Metropolitan St.  Louis Sewer District (MSD) crews and contractors have restored the full wastewater treatment process at the Fenton Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) that is required during the recreation season from April 1- October 31.  This includes the re-establishment of wastewater disinfection using ultraviolet light.  With the restoration of full treatment, the Fenton WWTP again meets regulatory standards.  As a result, the recreation advisory for the Meramec River has been lifted.  MSD crews are in the process of removing signs.

This marks an important milestone in MSD’s recovery after historic rains and flooding in late 2015/early 2016.  As a result of the rain and flooding, MSD experienced the shutdown of two treatment plants, including the Fenton WWTP, and damage to a third plant.  Wastewater treatment was interrupted at the Grand Glaize WWTP in Valley Park, but restored within a matter of weeks.  Damage at the Missouri River WWTP, located along the Missouri River near the Page Avenue Extension and the Maryland Heights Expressway/Highway 141, did not interrupt the wastewater treatment process at that facility.  However, the Fenton WWTP suffered the greatest damage of the three plants when floodwaters from the Meramec River topped the levee surrounding the facility.  The plant was submerged under 6 feet of water, knocking the wastewater treatment process at the facility offline for several weeks.  Since then, MSD crews and contractors have essentially rebuilt the plant,  gradually bringing the full wastewater treatment process back online.

While the full wastewater treatment process at the Fenton WWTP has been restored, it will take several more months to restore back-up systems and other non-critical functions of the plant.

MSD will host a community meeting on Friday, April 8, 2016, at 6:00pm, to update area residents.  The meeting will take place at Arnold City Hall, located at 2101 Jeffco Boulevard, Arnold, MO 63010.  (Please use the rear entrance.  Signage will also be posted to direct the public to the meeting room.)
