Crews with the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District (MSD) are cleaning up a sewage spill in parts of Richmond Heights and Maplewood, Missouri.
MSD crews were performing a routine inspection when they discovered sewage overflowing from an interceptor into Claytonia creek near the intersection of Claytonia Terrace and Lindbergh Drive in Richmond Heights, Missouri. The crews discovered that the interceptor was blocked with debris. The crews cleared the blockage and restored the sewer to full service. After clearing the blockage, crews began the process of containing and cleaning up the spill.
Clean up efforts are ongoing and will continue through the week. Clean up crews are near the intersection of Claytonia Terrace and Lindbergh drive, Bruno Avenue, and the intersection of Laclede Station Road and Weaver Avenue. The affected areas run through Lindbergh Park, Trolley Park, Kellogg Park and portions of Hampton Branch Creek. Crews are working to contain the spill in Hampton Branch Creek, just south of Kellogg Park.
There is no immediate threat to public health or safety. MSD has placed warning signs in the areas where general public may easily come into contact with the creek. If a member of the public should come in contact with the water in the creek or other affected areas, they should immediately and thoroughly wash with soap and water.
Sewer service to customers in this area has not and will not be affected.
The sewer main blockage and associated overflow have been reported to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, as required by law.
