MSD Crews Responding and Cleaning up a Sewage Spill in Laumeier Sculpture Park
Early Wednesday morning, Crews with The Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District (MSD) were called to investigate a report of a sewage spill near the 3600 block of South Geyer Road, which is located near Laumeier Sculpture Park in St. Louis, Missouri. A contractor for the City of Sunset Hills, that was working in the area struck and broke a water main and a force main sewer. Upon arrival MSD crews discovered sewage discharging from the main into a nearby dry creek of the Meramec River that runs through Laumeier Sculpture Park.
The MSD pump station in the area was immediately shutdown, which stopped the flow to the force main. The crews repaired the damaged force main and restarted the pump station within a few hours of the initial break.
Clean up efforts began a little after noon and will continue for the next 48-hours. A portion of the affected cleanup area is on the property of Laurmeier Sculpture Park. MSD has notified the St. Louis County Parks department of the incident.
There is no immediate threat to public health or safety from this sewage spill. MSD has placed warning signs in the area, including Laurmeier Sculpture Park, advising the public of the sewage spill. The public is asked to heed the signs and avoid the affected areas. If a member of the public should come in contact with the water in the creek or other affected areas, they should immediately and thoroughly wash with soap and water.
Sewer services to customers in this area were not affected. The force main break and associated overflow have been reported to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, as required by law.
