Beginning at 9am on Monday, April 6th, all lanes of Southwest Avenue will be shut down between McCausland Avenue to Lowry Avenue. Local traffic will be able to access Southwest Avenue from Bellevue Avenue, so that contracted crews with the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District (MSD) can complete construction on a storm sewer line.
Construction crews will be installing a 72- inch storm sewer pipe under the area where Southwest Avenue intersects with McCausland Avenue, extending west towards Bellevue Avenue. Crews will move a 12-inch water main in order to complete the storm sewer pipe install.
The closure is expected to last a little over two months. Signs will be placed in the area guiding drivers to alternate routes. Residents in the affected area have been notified of the upcoming closures.
The construction is a part of MSD Project Clear, MSD’s initiative to improve water quality and alleviate many wastewater concerns in the St. Louis region. This installation of a new, larger storm sewer line is part of the ongoing effort to relieve building backups due to the overcharged combined sewers in the City of St. Louis, Maplewood, and Richmond Heights. This sewer is a part of the River Des Peres sewer system.
