21st Century Solutions for a Cleaner, Safer Tomorrow
Like the community we serve, MSD Project Clear works around the clock to keep our region’s public wastewater and stormwater infrastructure operating as designed.
Aging systems, the impacts of climate change, and the demands of modern life call for forward-thinking solutions and strategic system improvements. From upgrading wastewater systems to enhancing stormwater management and delivering landmark public infrastructure, we’re building the systems our region needs to thrive in the 21st century and beyond.

Wastewater Improvements
The St. Louis region is home to one of the nation’s largest and most complex wastewater systems, with almost 10,000 miles of pipe, 345,000 manholes and inlets, 281 pump stations, and seven treatment plants treating up to 800 million gallons per day. By modernizing this vast network, we are protecting public health, safety, and the water environment for generations to come.

Stormwater Improvements
In 2024, voters approved the first-ever regional stormwater improvement program, providing dedicated funding to address stormwater problems like flooding and erosion. These improvements will protect public safety, reduce damage to homes and property, and improve the health of our waterways as climate change fuels more frequent and intense storms.

Landmark Infrastructure
Some projects stand out for their size, complexity, and long-term impact. These major improvements are the legacy of MSD Project Clear’s agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency and the Missouri Coalition for the Environment, and include deep-bore tunnels, large storage tanks, high-capacity pump stations, and facility upgrades that will serve our region for generations to come.
