MSD Responds to Overflow in Bridgeton

(March 18, 2021) – The Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District (MSD) is responding to a wastewater overflow in Bridgeton. It happened early Thursday morning during heavy rain and storms. MSD’s pump station team was monitoring the system in real-time when there was an alarm at a pump station on Taussig Road, and a crew was immediately deployed to identify and address the issue.

Sewer service was not affected, and the overflow was largely contained to a wooded area immediately surrounding the pump station. Cleanup and disinfection needs will be assessed as soon as the rain stops.

Warning signs have been posted in the area, advising the public of the overflow. While there is no immediate threat to public health or safety, everyone is asked to avoid any creeks, ponds or detention basins in the immediate vicinity until everything can be cleaned up. Anyone who comes in contact with wastewater should immediately and thoroughly wash with soap and water.

MSD maintains and operates nearly 300 pump stations around the City of St. Louis and St. Louis County. Pumps are necessary when gravity alone is not enough to move wastewater through flat areas or over hills to a wastewater treatment plant.

MSD has reported the overflow to The Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
