Landmark Infrastructure
Some projects stand out for their size, complexity, and long-term impact. These major improvements are the legacy of MSD Project Clear’s agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency and the Missouri Coalition for the Environment, and include deep-bore tunnels, large storage tanks, high-capacity pump stations, and facility upgrades that will serve our region for generations to come.
Tunnels
Tunnels are a crucial part of MSD Project Clear’s efforts to reduce wastewater back-ups and overflows into the environment throughout the St. Louis region. The tunnels – which are typically 200′ underground in the bedrock – create millions of gallons of additional capacity to store excess wastewater surges.
Pump Stations
Pump stations are designed to move large volumes of wastewater from low-lying areas to higher elevations or treatment plants when gravity alone isn’t enough. Pump stations typically include a wet well, multiple pumps, and automated electronic controls that ensure continuous operation when necessary.
Storage Facilities
Storage facilities are designed to temporarily hold excess wastewater during surges, dramatically reducing the likelihood of a wastewater back-up or overflow into the environment. Once the wastewater system has capacity, the stored wastewater is released back into the sewers and transported to a treatment plant.
Wastewater Treatment Plants
Wastewater treatment plants clean wastewater by removing solids, contaminants, and other pollutants through physical and biological processes. The treated water is then released into area rivers.
