Crews with the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District (MSD) are making repairs after a sewer main break occurred near Riverview and Chain of Rocks Drive in north St. Louis City.

The leak was discovered on Monday, December 17 by MSD crews who were performing a routine inspection of the sewer mains in the area. The initial break was contained, however it was later determined that more extensive efforts are necessary to repair the broken pipe. Sewage is currently contained within the system and is not overflowing into nearby Maline Creek.

It is estimated that over 80,000 gallons of sewage entered into Maline Creek before the break was contained. Repairs and cleanup efforts are ongoing and are expected to be completed tomorrow.

MSD has placed warning signs in these areas and is advising the public to avoid contact with the affected section of this creek. While there is no immediate threat to public health or safety, the public is asked to avoid contact with the creek in this area while MSD crews make the necessary repairs and clean up the affected area. If anyone should come into contact with the creek in this area, they should immediately and thoroughly wash with soap and water.

The sewer main break was reported to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, as required by law.
