This evening, the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District (MSD) will immediately close one lane of northbound Hanley Road in Maplewood to fully assess and make emergency repairs to a section of 42-inch corrugated metal stormwater sewer that has collapsed and runs underneath the roadway. The lane to be closed is the northbound curb side lane located south of Manchester Road. For worker safety reasons, work will begin at 6:00 AM tomorrow (Wednesday) morning.
Further lane closures could be required starting at 6:00 AM Wednesday morning and throughout the day. Drivers normally using this portion of Hanley Road are asked to seek alternate routes until the work is completed.
Traffic flow will be impacted in the following ways:
- The curbside lane of northbound Hanley Road will be closed directly south of Manchester Road. The other northbound lane may need to be closed at some point Wednesday morning, reducing both northbound and southbound traffic flow.
- Manchester Road will remain open in both directions (east-west).
- Hanley Road north of Manchester Road will have all lanes open. However, both northbound and southbound traffic could be impacted at Manchester Road.
- Drivers traveling north on Laclede Station Road may wish to detour starting at Marshall Road and not travel onto Hanley Road unless traveling to a home or business south of Manchester Road.
Earlier today, a report of a sinking roadway was made to MSD. Crews arrived to find a depression in the curb lane of northbound Hanley Road south of Manchester Road, near the southeast corner of the intersection. Investigation of the depression found that a section of 42-inch corrugated metal stormwater sewer is collapsing. Asphalt was laid to temporarily repair the roadway and to ensure safe vehicular travel throughout the day. However, with rain – and possibly thunderstorms – expected on Wednesday, the sewer must be repaired as soon as possible to ensure the integrity of the roadway and the operation of the area’s sewer system.
The 42-inch corrugated metal stormwater sewer runs underneath all lanes of Hanley Road south of Manchester Road and carries stormwater. The sewer dates to the 1930s and was installed by the Maplewood Sewer District – one of 79 sewer agencies consolidated into MSD since 1954.
An update on the length of the lane closure, possible additional lane closures, and the scope of the repairs will be made after a full assessment can be made on Wednesday.
